Aptiva Care Management took the lead in getting a man who was living in dreadful conditions into a charming and safe government funded assisted living in Long Beach, CA.

The case was set in motion by a phone call to Marc Friedman. It was from a woman named Vicky, who sadly, had just lost her 58-year-old husband to COVID-19. Although, she was devastated by the loss, her focus turned to the welfare of her 61-year-old brother Bruce. He was living in squalor, with other homeless people, in a nearly uninhabitable dilapidated mobile home located in Hemet. She called Aptiva Care Management to help get him out of there and to safety.

Marc went to Hemet to assess the living situation in the mobile home and the condition of Vicky’s brother. The environment was awfully bad; Bruce was physically and mentally disabled – and eating food off the floor.

Aptiva is well versed in the government programs available to people in similar situations. First thing, Aptiva got Bruce accepted into a few government programs.
That included a weeklong stay in the hospital to address several issues resulting from his unhealthy living conditions. His ailments included dehydration, edema, and a urinary tract infection (UTI). Additionally, Bruce was treated for stage 3 and 4 wounds. A stage 3 wound is defined as a sore that worsens and extends into the tissue beneath the skin, forming a small crater. At stage 4, the pressure injury is very deep, reaching into muscle and bone and causing extensive damage.

Upon his discharge from the hospital, Aptiva Care Managers transferred Bruce into a state-licensed board and care home for 30 days where he received care and supervision.

All the while, Aptiva Care Management was in search of, and vetting, permanent placement for him. Happily, and with great relief to his sister, Aptiva found a safe, clean, and attractive government funded assisted living home in Long Beach. We moved him to his new residence on May 5, 2021.

After the death of Vicky’s husband and all the worry she was experiencing regarding her brother, Aptiva Care Management was glad we could give her something to smile about. Now, she can safely visit Bruce and have him back in her life.
